URGENT !!!! Beware Facebook Users !!!!
Well, I have been telling you all for months now that Facebook was becoming more of a Data collection site than a social network, well now this should prove it.
As you know, Facebook had that issue with 3rd party apps selling information of the users who use their applications and were very slow to react to or do any thing about it to protect its users. I even wrote a column on it for Examiner.com, where I cover the social media. Here is the story I wrote back when the big app issue came out back in November Facebook Gives Out To Much Data To Apps, No Wonder Why They Sell It Well now, just when you thought that issue was over they come out with this.
They are now allowing applications, you approve to use to get your current address & MOBILE phone number. Now, you tell me if they are a social site or a Data collection site !!!
This is completely unacceptable and I know, I for one, will not be allowing any new applications on Facebook anymore. I knew this day would come. There is no reason any application needs to access your current address and MOBILE phone number for anything, period. Now you know why they were busting our chops about us giving them our MOBILE phone number.
I suggest we all go and comment on the blog and email Facebook, I suggest the Legal Dept is the place to send your emails to, as they seem to act the fastest and this is the email email@example.com and let them know of our displeasure to try and stop this ASAP. If we can get them to not allow this to happen then our personal information will be safe from scam apps and all the other app.
Facebook currently has over 500 Million users and they haven't proven to anyone, especially government agencies around the world that they can properly safe guard our information and they even admit that they have no control over what these applications nor accept any responsibilities of what they do. This they told to CONGRESS .back in October when they were questioned by them. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/10/19/congress-sends-message-facebook-privacy/
So it's up to us the users to tell them what we think about this. Facebook's record on privacy is absolutely horrible and they dont really seem to care or want to really do anything about it despite repeated requests by worldwide governments, advocacy groups but more importantly us the users. So sharpen your pencils and get to work everyone before it is too late.
